We dare you to find a more charming home base than Bath in England!
This Georgian city on Roman foundations is an absurdly charming visit. With plenty of attractions to occupy your time, delicious eateries, and amazing shopping opportunities filled with locally crafted goodies, Bath is a wonderful and safe home base option. Not to mentionits proximity to fabulous visits in Salisbury, Bristol, the rest of West England – and even into Wales! – makes it a lovely stopping place between destinations.
Attractions, attractions, attractions
Bath is a perfect city for groups due to its compact nature! It's only 28 square kilometers – or 11 square miles – and brimming with life and history around every corner.
Even when you're just skimming the surface, Bath has over 12 famous museums and galleries, on top of numerous famous houses. From local artists' exhibitions to Mary Shelley's House of Frankenstein to the Roman Baths themselves, your group simply cannot be bored here.
In addition to its museums, it's also a delightful city for a walking tour. Due to the breadth of time humans have spent in the central area, you can keep your walking tour short and centralised, or you can get a wider view of the city with a visit out to the famous Circus, the Holburne Museum, or the Bath skyline viewpoint.
On top of all of this structured time, this city, with its many green spaces and attractions mostly surrounded by the River Avon, is a safe space to let groups have some autonomy over their time – worry-free. And during this free time, the group's can enjoy Bath's emphasis on independent retailers rather than chains; while they spend time shopping in some of the literal hundreds of shops, they'll know that their purchases are supporting local economies too!
And if that still hasn't piqued your interest, this is also the home of Brigderton! Thanks to its beautifully preserved Georgian charm, you can walk in the footsteps of Eloise, visit Lady Danbury's home, or peek in the window of the hairdresser-turned-tea-rooms-set! Naturally, if that has gripped your attention, you'll be delighted to know there's a strong presence of Jane Austen appreciation in the city, too! Having spent a short amount of time in Bath as a young woman, she's a pillar of Bath's pride, and they even hold the Jane Austen Festival every year!
As a stop en route
For all of the reasons listed above, Bath can be a great stop on the way to other visits, to break up a long travel day, or a nice home base to plan day trips from!
Super centrally located, it's about an hour and a half to Cardiff in Wales, Salisbury, and the Cotswolds. But shorter day visits include an hour to Stonehenge, an hour to Glastonbury, 45 minutes to Bristol, and plenty of more.
